Birthday Blessings for Avery and Kendall

Avery and Kendall listening to their birthday song

In our small groups at church we decided to start celebrating the kids' birthdays as a group to encourage them and to give the adults, particularly their parents, a chance to affirm them.  March was the first month that we did this, so we actually celebrated all the kids who had January, February, and March birthdays, which included Kendall and Avery.  I made a cake and we gave each of the 5 birthday kids a piece with a candle in it.  After we sang "Happy Birthday" the dads all had a chance to say a blessing over their kids in front of the group.  It was embarrassing for most of the kids, but I think it will be memorable and meaningful to them later on.  For Kendall's blessing, Scott talked about her determination and self-control and how we believed that those two qualities would help her to do great things for God's kingdom.  For Avery's blessing, he talked about her ability to read people and help them or give/say to them what they needed.  He also talked about how she was very nurturing and would make a wonderful Mother one day.  The kids all received a card signed by the adults with encouraging words and messages.  I think it was very special and fun for all the kids and I'm really glad that we decided to do it!
